ABOUT MONTAGUE COLLECTIONS
Our Background
Glen & Mandy and have found themselves back here in the UK, after having led a full and varied life working and living around the world.
Glen ( an experienced traditional Cabinet-Maker) makes beautiful solid timber custom-made furniture, and has joined Mandy in their new venture by making Solid Oak Lamp Bases for her vibrant, quirky, handcrafted lampshades.
He also makes stunning mirrors using the natural edged timber as a 'frame'.
Glen worked from an early age, as an apprentice Cabinet Maker at EJ Thimbleby & Son in Lincoln. His work in the UK took him all over the UK, learning his craft as he went. Even to this day, he is still acquiring knowledge, as he finds new ways of creating unique items for the home.
He had his own business for most of the past 30 years in Sydney, Australia. There he was able to work with many different & beautiful Australian hardwoods. Every week brought new problems to solve, as the designers he produced a huge amount of work for, kept coming up with increasingly challenging ideas - however, Glen amazingly always found a way...and extended his range of experience and knowledge by numerous notches....!
His commercial work in Australia included a vast array of projects, including furniture for restaurant and pub interiors, libraries, medical centres, food courts, shopping centres and sports stadiums.
Domestic projects were equally varied, having created many beautiful kitchens, beds, bathroom cabinets, private libraries with rolling ladders, coffee & dining tables....the list goes on.
You can browse through the website to find some of his past projects in Australia.
Mandy worked on cruise ships for 14 years, and lived in Australia for the last decade, and her love of travelling opened Mandy's eyes to a rich tapestry of cultural and creative worlds. Her early Art College training and subsequent BA Degree in Photography left her in no doubt that her life really should be full of all things creative!
Now that has happened......due to her extensive sewing knowledge, and a good few lengths of silk dupion fabrics collected from her trips round the world over the years. She found herself needing a bright and vibrant lampshade for their new home but couldn't find just the unique style that she thought the house needed. So, purely by chance, she decided to make her own. She's put her hand to many different crafts over the years, but had no idea how exciting and therapeutic lampshade making could be. Once she started making them, she couldn't stop...only problem was she wanted to keep them all!
The process was quite a learning curve regarding the design and construction of the actual panels, however, she's now very happy and confident that her technique can lead to developing many more of the designs that are continually evolving in her head!
On her return to the UK from Australia, she found inspiration for her current style at a visit to an exhibition of stunning, contemporary, bright, stained glass panels in Norfolk. She was so excited about the possibilities of mingling different fabrics to achieve a dramatic light effect.
Her collection of silks was never going to be made into beautiful elegant evening wear, so a new home was found for them....becoming the 'cut-out, sewn-in' shapes in her original range of lampshades.
The contrasting fabrics came together to create these items of zany vibrancy!
New ideas and ranges are always being created in her studio, and will appear on this website.
